Pool Deck Surfacing

Pool Deck Rubber Surfacing In Oakville, Ontario

We pour a seamless, porous rubber surfacing layer over concrete, Kool Deck, pavers and stamped concrete around backyard pools in Oakville. Each surface we pour is fully insured. Nothing is torn out: the existing deck becomes what the rubber surfacing bonds to.

Pool Deck Surfacing details

A Slippery Pool Deck Is The Most Common Call We Get In Oakville

We replace a slick, chalky or spalling pool deck surface with a rubber surfacing layer that grips wet feet. Brushed concrete loses its texture after a few decades of chlorine and winter, and painted or acrylic-coated decks turn to ice when wet. A textured rubber deck holds a bare foot even with water running across it.

The coping, the skimmer lids and the steps into the shallow end are the places people slip most, so we trowel the rubber surfacing tight to each of them rather than stopping short. The finished deck reads as one surface from the house wall to the water. Drains and lights are cut around and left clear.

The texture is the granule itself rather than a coating, so there is nothing to wear off. A rubber pool deck also stays cooler than concrete or stone in the afternoon sun, and a child who slips lands on something soft.

Oakville's 1960s To 1990s Pools Sit On Decks That Have Seen Fifty Winters

We cover the pitted decks around the older pools south of the QEW and in Glen Abbey. The big lots in Morrison, Eastlake, Old Oakville and Bronte filled with in-ground pools from the 1960s on, and Glen Abbey followed in the 1980s. Many of those decks are original concrete that has thawed and refrozen every winter since.

The lake keeps Oakville hovering near zero rather than locked in a deep freeze, and that constant cycling is what pits a deck. Rubber surfacing drains water through to the slab instead of leaving it on top to freeze, so the damage stops. A deck that is flaking but solid underneath is a good base for rubber surfacing.

How A Pool Deck Rubber Surfacing Pour Goes

We start a pool deck by pressure washing or grinding the deck down to clean, bare concrete, because rubber surfacing will not bond over sealer, paint or a dusty slab. Cracks that are still working get filled before any primer is applied.

The rubber surfacing is batched beside the pool and hand-troweled just under half an inch deep, tight to the coping and skimmer lids. Sand, tan, grey and blue-grey blends are the usual choices around a pool, and we pour them with an aliphatic binder so light colours do not amber in the sun. Most backyard decks are finished in one or two days and take foot traffic the next morning. The pool can be open while we work if the deck is dry.
