The Life Of Rubber Surfacing Is Decided In The Preparation
We spend most of the first day on the base, because a job that fails almost always failed at the bond. Rubber will not stick to old sealer, paint, oil, dust or damp concrete. So we pressure wash or grind, we cut and fill any crack that still moves, and we let the surface dry before a drop of primer goes on.
An Oakville slab has a particular history. It sits on silty clay over red shale, and it thaws and refreezes for months each winter because the lake keeps the town near zero. Those two facts explain most of the cracks and pitting we see, and they are why the rubber has to go on a clean, primed, sound base rather than over the problem.
The Two Granules In Rubber Surfacing Are EPDM And SBR
We use two kinds of rubber granule, and the quote names which one goes where. EPDM is a factory-made rubber whose colour runs through every granule, stable in sunlight, and it forms the visible top layer on any coloured rubber surfacing. SBR comes from recycled tires, is black and costs less, and it makes the cushion layer under a playground or across a whole garage or gym where black is the colour wanted.
The binder is polyurethane, either aromatic or aliphatic. Aliphatic costs more and stays clear in the sun, so we use it under sand, tan and grey pool decks. Aromatic works under black and dark blends where a little ambering will never show.
Where Oakville Rubber Surfacing Works
Our work covers the older pools on the big lots south of the QEW, on the 1980s patios of Glen Abbey and Clearview, in the garages of River Oaks, on the condo terraces along the lake and in the Uptown Core, and on the barn aisles past Dundas. Daycares, schools, seniors' residences and restaurant patios across Halton are the commercial side of it.
Burlington and Clarkson are inside the regular area. If a property is a little beyond, ask, because the visit is still free and the answer is usually yes.
How Oakville Rubber Surfacing Arrives At A Price
We price rubber surfacing by measured square footage, thickness, granule and the condition of the base. Thickness is the biggest lever: a half-inch patio and a three-inch playground are very different jobs on the same footprint. Colour EPDM costs more than black SBR. Heavy grinding or crack repair is listed on its own line.
In this region jobs commonly run from about $8 to $16 per square foot for decks, patios, steps and garages, and from about $15 to $30 and up for playgrounds. Those are ranges. The written quote is the price, and it does not move unless the scope does.
