Salt soaks into concrete and breaks the surface apart from the inside.
Rubber surfacing is not harmed by salt. Brine sits in the rubber, drains, and hoses off in the spring. We turn down surfaces that will not hold rubber, rather than pouring and hoping. Rubber surfacing will not bond to old acrylic sealer, paint, oil or a dusty slab. A deck that is still damp from a pressure wash, or a slab that was sealed in 2019, has to be ground back to clean concrete first or the rubber peels in sheets the following spring.

We offer rubber surfacing in solid colours and blends, and the colour you keep after five summers depends on what is in it. EPDM granules carry their colour right through the grain and do not fade in the sun. Recycled SBR granules are black and cheaper, so they go underneath as a cushion layer or alone where black is wanted.
The binder matters just as much as the granule. An aliphatic polyurethane binder costs more and stays clear. Under black and dark blends an aromatic binder does the job, but it will amber a sand or light grey pool deck over time. The quote names which binder we are using and why.
We price every job by measuring the area, checking the base and choosing the thickness with you. In this region a poured rubber surfacing job over a garage floor, patio, walkway or existing deck commonly runs from about $8 to $16 a square foot. Playgrounds cost more, about $15 to $30 and up, because they are three to eight times thicker. A small job has a minimum charge, since setup and cleanup take the same time whether we pour 40 square feet or 400.

We pour from about the third week of April until the ground gets cold in late October. The binder needs the surface to be roughly ten degrees and rising, dry, and rain-free through the cure. On a pool deck, patio or walkway the rubber surfacing needs only three-eighths, or a half inch at most. That is enough to bridge small cracks, hide the texture of the old deck and give a soft, grippy surface. Thicker is not better on a deck, because it only adds cost and raises the edge at the coping.
Yes, it goes over pavers that are firm and level. Loose, heaved or rocking pavers get reset or bedded first. The rubber fills the joints and covers the whole field as one seamless surface, so the weeds and ant hills between pavers are gone.
Rubber surfacing is made for it. Water drains through instead of freezing on top, salt does not hurt it, and it flexes with the slab as the clay moves. You can shovel it with a plastic-edge shovel and leave the metal blade in the shed.
