A Dropped Dumbbell On Bare Concrete Chips The Floor And Shakes The House
We pour a rubber surfacing floor thick enough to take a dropped weight without chipping the slab or ringing through the walls. Interlocking mats slide, curl and collect sweat in the seams. A poured rubber surfacing floor comes as a single piece bonded to the slab, and it stays flat under a rack, a rower or a treadmill.
For a home gym in the garage or basement we pour three-eighths for general training, rising to a three-quarter inch where weights land and thicker still under a lifting platform. The floor is warmer than concrete in a February basement in Glen Abbey or River Oaks and does not sweat in July.
Under a squat rack or a deadlift platform we pour the rubber surfacing thicker, up to an inch, so a loaded bar dropped from the hip does not mark the slab. The rest of the room can stay at three-eighths for a bike, a bench and floor work. The two thicknesses meet flush.
Indoor Gyms Take Black SBR; Outdoor Fitness Pads Take Full-Colour EPDM
We pour indoor gym rubber surfacing in black recycled SBR, usually with a grey, blue or red EPDM fleck, because black hides chalk, rubber scuffs and dust and costs the least. It can be poured in any month because the temperature indoors is controlled.
Outdoor fitness pads at parks, condos, schools and seniors' residences get rubber surfacing with a coloured EPDM top layer, poured with an aliphatic binder so the colour does not fade or amber. Outdoor rubber drains through, so the pad is dry and usable an hour after rain rather than the next day.
Rubber Surfacing Fits The Fitness Rooms Oakville Is Building
We have poured rubber surfacing floors for the kind of spaces the town keeps adding: condo fitness rooms in the Uptown Core, converted garages in Joshua Creek, and outdoor circuit pads beside a playground. The town's own recreation centres from Sixteen Mile Sports Complex to Iroquois Ridge show what rubber flooring under weights looks like at scale.
The prep is the same as any other job. The slab has to be clean, dry and free of sealer or paint, and any old epoxy is ground off first. Then the mix is troweled flat and cures overnight.
